In 1990, Mel Bower gave up working for British Coal and decided to turn his passion for gardening into a full-time job.
Weedfree’s humble beginnings as a sign-written Ford Transit and a small fleet of garden machinery was first advertised with a local leaflet drop by friends as well as an advert in the local paper. Soon after that, the appointments started to come in. An expanded workload led to the hiring of Weedfree’s first staff member. Mel never looked back, and Weedfree continues its expansion.
The Wood Street Years
The small home garage soon became too small for Weedfree’s growing operations. Our first unit on Wood Street, located very close to the Mansfield Town Centre allowed the company to continue serving 300 gardens per fortnight with four employees.
Our Home on Westfield Lane
Weedfree soon expanded once again, requiring an even larger space it could call home. This was when an old car repair garage on Westfield Lane became available. This site was purchased and continues to be where all aspects of Weedfree’s business are located and all their machinery and vans are stored.
Family Operated
Today, Weedfree operations have continued at the hands of two generations of the Bower family. We have added over ten employees and a fleet of 10 vans to our roster, and are proud to service over 700 gardens per fortnight, in addition to our hundreds of other commercial contracts and domestic jobs.
Having become a limited company in 2008, we now trade as Weedfree. Three directors now run the company, and most of our core business activities now lie in the commercial and public sectors.
